SecondBite is committed to making a positive difference to people by identifying sources of nutritious surplus food and produce, that would otherwise go to waste, and facilitating its safe and timely distribution to agencies and people in need.

SecondBite is a small, dynamic, Melbourne based, not-for-profit organisation that is committed to making a difference to the quality of life for many people who are living in disadvantaged circumstances or homeless.
SecondBite collects surplus fresh food (with the focus on nutrition) that would otherwise go to waste.
In 2008, SecondBite is on track to stop 250 tonnes of fresh food going to landfill, instead redistributing it to over 64 agencies and thousands of people who are homeless or living in disadvantaged circumstances. That’s enough to provide 500,000 hearty, nutritious 500g meals.
SecondBite’s vision, going forward, is to help bridge the gap between surplus and need; we have the tools we have the experience, we have the volunteers waiting, our only restriction is the funding.

The simplicity of this model has enabled us to be extremely flexible in our collections, thus maximising the quality of food collected and minimising waste, whilst providing a fair distribution of surplus fresh food to a variety of agencies. By remaining autonomous and impartial SecondBite ensures that for today and going forward all agencies, large (>400 meals per day) and small (
Many community groups and agencies provide food for a wide range of cultural groups. Providing the raw ingredients, rather than ‘ready-prepared meals’ allows each individual group the dignity of deciding what menu’s to create.
In order that the collections and distribution be facilitated in a safe and timely manner it is necessary to transport the fresh produce in a fully refrigerated van. A member of staff/driver is on hand to provide continuity for the food donors, to ensure that OH&S and food safety policies are followed, to help with the collections and to drive the refrigerated van. These procedures in turn need administration and monitoring.
Collecting surplus fresh food is an extremely cost effective way to provide nutritious meals, our current statistics show that for every $1 donated, SecondBite can collect and distribute enough fresh produce to provide 2 hearty nutritious 500g meals.
