Young people with mental illness are socially isolated, feel marginalized by their mental health problems from mainstream youth services, and are often disinclined to access health or mental health services. Urban Arts Base (UAB) is the only specialist community arts project which supports young people with mental health issues in their recovery in Australia. Our clients may be experiencing schizophrenia, bi-polar, borderline personality disorder, depression or anxiety.

WHAT WE DO

We provide a fun, safe and youth friendly environment where young people can regain the confidence and skills necessary to re-engage with education, employment, vocational training and social and community networks. UAB also facilitates an outreach art program called ‘Art Reach’ for other youth and health organisations, such as psychiatric in-patient units. This exciting new outreach program won an award from the Mental Health Association of NSW in 2007.

HOW WE DO IT

UAB runs art and music workshops such as painting, drawing, photography, film, drama, creative writing, print making, graphic design and whatever else our participants want to do! The participants increase their self-esteem, social and artistic skills, giving them the confidence to move on into employment or further education.

WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES

There is a limited amount of funding available for urgently required mental health services in Australia. Your assistance helps keep our program running, one which no other service is providing. The main areas of need are staff wages to keep the arts programs running and to provide all workshops free of charge to program participants.

HOW TO MAKE A DONATION

To make a donation, please email urbanartsbase@ways.org.au with the subject line “UAB donation enquiry” or call us on (02) 9328 3014.
