Save-A-Dog Scheme (S.A.D.S.) was established in 1985 to offer a humane alternative to the killing of unwanted dogs, especially dogs of good temperament, that would otherwise be destroyed at pounds and shelters.
As of 2008 we are caring for cats as well. Over 90 cats are being looked after at present.

S.A.D.S. is an incorporated, non-profit, community based organisation controlled and operated by volunteers with the help of paid staff. It operates as a registered animal shelter and combines this with foster care in the community. Each dog is neutered, wormed, vaccinated, micro chipped and temperament assessed prior to adoption.
|
S.A.D.S. relies on donations for its continuing existence and does not receive any government funding. Donations to S.A.D.S. help with the general care of the dogs and the maintenance of the organisation. The greatest expense is for veterinary treatment for the dogs, which includes the care of sick and injured dogs. These dogs are nursed back to health rather than being destroyed, as they may be elsewhere.
|
S.A.D.S. has a no kill philosophy and believes that the dichotomy of a dog being "Mans Best Friend" on the one hand and an unwanted article for destruction on the other is totally unacceptable. S.A.D.S. is a "coal-face" organisation, which saves hundreds of dogs each year and which seeks, by example, to provide a better way of treating non-human animals. S.A.D.S. also cares and rehouses a variety of other animals including cats and rabbits!

It's a busy and exciting time at Save-A-Dog Scheme! In late 2006, we moved into our new premises in Glen Iris. The new shelter is just a few metres away from the old building but a wonderful improvement in facilities for the dogs. In mid-2007, following a lengthy search, we found a wonderful new property to purchase. The 6.5 acre property is located at Devon Meadows, just a few minutes out of Cranbourne. This new property will be complementary to our current state-of-the-art shelter in Glen Iris which is owned by Stonnington Council and operated by Save-A-Dog Scheme. When operational, our new property will augment and help our work in conjunction with our present home. We now begin the task of funding the mortgage and planning the new shelter buildings.
