Around Australia's coastline more than 144 ocean and estuary outfall pipelines are daily dumping a toxic cocktail of more than three billion litres of semi-treated domestic, industrial, trade and abattoir waste on to or near to our shorelines. These pipelines are in most cases controlled and sanctioned by State Governments and as our population expands, so too does the volume of waste.

Clean Ocean was set up in December 2000 by a band of dedicated beach users who argued it was time for the relevant authorities to be responsible and move towards sustainability. Clean Ocean's membership now exceeds 1600 people supporting the maxim: The ocean is not a dumping ground. This practice must cease to be an option used by the water authorities. Clean Ocean has been working against the Gunnamatta pipeline situated in a Marine National Park on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. This pipeline is the largest shoreline outfall in Australia, daily dumping more than 450 million litres: this is 42% of Melbourne's waste.
Clean Ocean is campaignng for waste water reuse to Purified Recycled Water, a potable (drinkable) resource that Australia needs in these drying times. This allows outfall closure, and sustainable use of our precious water.

Australia has a serious government-sanctioned coastal pollution problem, coupled with an indiscriminate waste of water resources. If left unabated this will permanently sully our waterways, make our beaches unsafe and cause irreversible environmental problems.
Our work involves informing the public, lobbying Government, and Education Programs for school children so they can grow up making the right decisions when it comes to sustainable water use.
